Welwyn Garden DFAS, with a matched grant from the Patricia Fay Memorial Fund, supported a sculpture project at Onslow, St Audrey’s School in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
The school employed sculptor Carrie Yuen for a three day residency to work with 26 “gifted and talented” students from Year 9.
The theme chosen was “Elizabethan” because the school has good links to nearby Hatfield House. Enthusiastic and inspired students used their newly acquired skills to produce work of high quality. They created large stylized sculptures of the heads of Tudor characters which were then arranged in two groups, one in a totem formation in an open courtyard, the other as a frieze in a covered area which is used for both school and local community activities.
Headmaster, Paul Meredith wrote ”I can think of no aspect of the visit that was not successful. The students involved are buzzing, and a number have come into school today (a staff training day) to complete their work”.
NADFAS was involved filming the project as it developed. The unveiling ceremony formed part of an Arts Exhibition Evening on 5th July, with local press recording the event.
