Olympic Explorer: day of special interest to Olympic Site and Woolwich Arsenal
Chris Lund writes: On Thursday 13th October 2011, 53 members visited the Olympic Site and Woolwich Arsenal. Despite the somewhat inclement weather this proved to be a most interesting and enjoyable day.
With prior knowledge we had obtained the services of the blue badge guide Sean Kelleher, who was both very informative and entertaining - his rendition of Benny Hill's "The fastest milk-cart in the west" as we crossed the Woolwich ferry kept many in stitches.
We learnt a great deal about the preparation of the area of East London for the building of the Olympic venues and the lengths to which the organisers have gone to be environmentally friendly and to recycle materials wherever possible, plus the considerations given to the needs of the locality and the legacy after the games take place next July and August.
An extra treat for some was a quick look at the newly opened Westfield shopping complex. Coffee and lunch were taken at Ye Olde Black Bull in Stratford - a traditional East End pub, with excellent food and surprisingly modest prices.
The trip south of the Thames gave us sight of the longest parade ground in the world at the Woolwich Barracks where the Olympic shooting events will be held, and a final stop for tea at the Woolwich Arsenal, with its interesting museum.Feedback has been very positive after a fascinating day.

On Sunday 11th September 2011 we presented the record of St Michael & All Angels, Waterford, at morning service in the church. The response was very appreciative and a contribution has been made towards the expenses of the Society together with a glowing tribute to the professionalism of the work done by the recorders. A copy of the record will be on display at the October meeting of the Society.
We have now started work at St Mary, Stapleford, which is in the same ministry as Waterford and will complete our recording of all four churches in this benefice - the other two being Watton-at-Stone and Bramfield.
Church recorders from all over the Beds & Herts area gathered at Clifton, Beds, on September 28th to celebrate the completion of 100 church records since recording began in 1973.
The 101st record (All Saints, Clifton) was presented in the church, and then a celebratory tea was enjoyed in the church hall where a certificate for the 100th record (St Michael & All Angels, Waterford) was presented together with a toast to past, present and future recorders and the cutting of a cake made by one of the group leaders. Examples of past records were on display including the first two from 1973 and 1974.Go to the Church Recorders page to read more about their work.
