MEETING - Wednesday 17 March 2010
Antony Penrose : Lee Miller and Roland Penrose at Farley Farm![]()
The Farley's Yard Trust takes its inspiration from the lives and works of Roland Penrose and Lee Miller. They lived at Farley Farm in East Sussex which came to be known as 'The Home of The Surrealists in England' and holds a a dazzling collection of artistic treasures. Farley's became a meeting place for many of the most influential artists of the 20th century including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Paul Éluard and Henry Moore.
Sir Roland Penrose - English Surrealist painter and poet, best known for his exhibitions and books on the work of his friends Picasso, Ernst, Miró, Man Ray, and Tàpies. He organised the International Surrealist Exhibition 1936, which led to the establishment of an English Surrealist movement and was the co-founder of the ICA. His bold and enigmatic Surrealist paintings, drawings and objects are some of the most enduring images of the movement. He is best known for his post card collages, examples of which are found in major national collections worldwide.
His wife, Lee Miller, produced some of the most powerful photographs of the 20th century, from portraits of her friends such as Pablo Picasso, to her work as a correspondent with the US army in World War II. Beginning her own studio in Paris with artist Man Ray, she went on to work with Vogue, and in France, Egypt, and New York, being best remembered for her witty Surrealist images.
Our lecturer for the March meeting, Antony Penrose, is the son of Sir Roland Penrose. His talk focuses on the artistic milieu of their home in Sussex, Farley Farm, where they mixed with such regular house guests as Picasso, Man Ray, Max Ernst and Joan Miro, - in effect, a Sussex melting pot of European surrealism and modernism - an extraordinary upbringing.
Antony's own lecture venues include the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Getty Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Stedjlik in Amsterdam and Gallery of Photography in Dublin. He has published (and edited) several books about different aspects of his parents' lives and work.
